CS373 Fall 2020: Sujoy Purkayastha

What did you do this past week?

My group and I completed phase I of the IDB project.

What’s in your way?

Currently, my backend team and I need to quickly learn Flask and PostgreSQL for the second phase of the IDB project.

What will you do next week?

I plan to start watching tutorial videos on the two aforementioned topics and start designing the details and specifications of our backend database.

If you read it, what did you think of Why Is Silicon Valley So Awful to Women?

I read the article and I was quite shocked at how much discrimination women experience in the tech industry. I’ve always known that women are often doubted and overspoken by their male colleagues, but the article expressed experiences that were much more disturbing than I could ever expect. The degree and severity of the sexual harassment that many of the women in the article recounted have definitely shifted my thoughts on the matter. I absolutely believe that something must be actively done to allow women to feel more welcome in the tech industry. It’s such a rewarding field, and I believe that it is an absolute shame that the current situation is preventing many women from considering a career in the tech industry.

What was your experience of iterators, reduce(), and tuple?

I encountered these concepts in an introductory Python class that I took last year.

What’s it like working in a group?

There is a lot of overhead to get everyone up to speed, but once everyone knows what to do, progress ensues very quickly!

What was your experience of the team contract?

My group and I have worked together many times before, so I do not think the team contract will be necessary.

What was your experience of the peer review?

It was quick to. fill out as I was very satisfied with everyone’s performance for phase I.

What made you happy this week?

My team and I were able to complete phase I on time!

What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

AWS is very useful to deploy the website for the class. We used an EC2 instance earlier, but it was quite complicated to set up.
